Host: Tim Jacob – Reach the World
In June, we had the opportunity to discuss ideas on how to share the research. Tim Jacob gave an Education and Outreach Workshop, sharing the perspective and methods of the organization ‘Reach the World‘. The aim is to connect researchers or explorers with classroom students (currently limited to the USA), providing them with the opportunity to follow the journey online and interact directly with the researcher.
Tim Jacob shared useful tips on how to promote outreach: start where you are (no one has perfect tools or methods at the beginning), define the reach or audience (connect with local teachers and/or schools if possible), adjust the language according to the public (sample or complex storytelling), check your availability and connectivity (when and how to be available), share your experience (even the simple things can be exciting), use the available resources (internet, in-person presentations, virtual exchanges, project-based learning). It is essential to start somewhere and continually improve.
Outreach activities are excellent for developing storytelling skills, improving scientific communication, building local representation, broadening the research reach, and improving competitiveness in grant applications.
